Analysis
The story is warm and sociable. I
am happy to know that loyalty favors many people. In Rikki-Tikki-Tavi,
Kipling spins a suspenseful story of a teenage mongoose who foils his human
adoptive family's efforts at protecting them from the deadly cobras, Nag and
Nagaina. The story evokes horror and fear as Rikki faces gruesome danger,
leading the reader to feel his helplessness while enjoying his courage at the
same time. His battle with the snakes is fierce and risky, but it testifies to
his bravery.
The emotional appeal of the story
is in Rikki's love and devotion to his human family, especially little Teddy.
Despite the danger posed by the cobras, Rikki's willingness to defend them
stems from an emotional attachment. His courageous act is actually a
sacrificial willingness to defend those he cares about and not necessarily
bravery, earning the reader's impression of admiration and love for his character.
The emotional respite arrives with
the final victory of Rikki, in which his intelligence and courage topple the
cobras. The fulfillment is cathartic since the pent-up tension sustained over
such an extended period finds release. The interweaving of themes in which
loyalty, courage, and the cycle of life are the elements is by Kipling done
masterfully to leave eternal imprints on the hearts of the readers.
